First Contact
When you first launch the Pieces Desktop App, you can choose from Light
or Dark
theme modes to fit your preferences—otherwise, this mode is tied to the preferences of your system and will periodically change.
You can also decide if you want to share anonymous crash data to help improve the product.
A Get Started
button takes you into the onboarding process.
Cloud Accounts & Integrations
This step includes an option to sign in with GitHub or Google to import code Gists and relevant data, or skip cloud integration and stay local if that suits you better.
Pieces for Developers stores snippets locally and allows you to share them to anyone you’d like, signing in enables you to store snippets and backups in Pieces Cloud.
The Magic Moment
Once past the Cloud Accounts & Integrations screen, you’ll be launched into the default Pieces Desktop App view, which is Pieces Copilot. This is your primary hub of activity.
From here, you can follow the guided, interactive Long-Term Memory demo and experience your first Magic Moment.
Using the Long-Term Memory Engine
LTM proactively captures and stores workflow context in the Pieces Drive, so you can open a website—like Stack Overflow, for example—read through some code explanations, then query Pieces Copilot later on in the day.
In this scenario, LTM will provide answers directly informed by the context that was captured, so you can access an AI assistant that’s “trained” on a constantly evolving set of data provided by you—all of which stays entirely on device.
Read more about data collection and storage here.
Your Secret Message
Part of the onboarding process is to utilize the heart of the Pieces for Developers experience—Pieces Copilot, outfitted with information from LTM.
For this interactive demo, you’ll have the chance to open a website with a secret message generated just for you, then query the Pieces Copilot about what it captured later.
To get started, click the Enable LTM Context
button to open the demo modal, then read the LTM introduction page, and click I’m In
to continue.
When clicking Generate Secret Message
, you’ll be redirected to the Secret Message page in your native (or default) browser on your device.
Here, you can find your Secret Message ready and waiting for you.
Click Copy Prompt
to save the prewritten prompt to your clipboard, which you’ll use later—a success modal will appear once you’ve done this successfully.
Clicking OK
on the modal will reopen the Pieces Desktop App, where you’ll see the text input field highlighted and awaiting your prompt.
Then, paste your prompt, and watch the magic happen.
